Tips for Christian Parents of Special Needs Children

Being a parent can be one of the most rewarding aspects of life; it can also be one of the most challenging. When you have a child with special needs, life can seem like a never-ending race from challenge to challenge. While life may seem atypical, it is an opportunity to trust in God and create joy from pain.

Tested or Blessed?

As with many things in life, when things come easy to us, we don’t learn much. It’s in those challenges and failures that we learn the most. View this parenting situation as a learning experience. “What am I made of? How can I make this easier? Where will this path lead me? Can I give my child the best life possible despite this obstacle?” How you view the situation will manifest itself; either positively, or negatively. Choose to be blessed and it will make all the difference.

Parenting From Scratch

When you have a special needs child, many of your parental preconceptions will roll right out the door. The great news is that, in this day and age, you have access to information and help that previous generations never had. You are not alone in this, in any sense of the word. If you are married, and raising this child together, you will want to become a unit to be reckoned with. If you are raising your child alone, find a strong support system to see you through. Focus your energy on their development, care, and on finding solutions to present problems.

Family Maintenance

Once the family has settled into a routine of care and commitment, remember to go back to basics every once in a while. Share the simple joys of family; picnics, movie night, board-games, cooking together, etc. Spend quality time with your spouse. While your special needs children may need specific attention and care, try to ensure that all your children have attention and know that they are loved. Hug your loved ones often and say I love you, even more often.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (Phil 4:13 NIV)
